Barcelona's tech job market, rebuilt from 2.3 million career histories

A joint project wants an interactive map of Barcelona's startup, IT and AI employers with the hiring behind them, 2019 → today. This page is the sizing step: how many companies and people the data holds, how far back the dated positions reach, what a ten-company pilot looks like when rebuilt the way the full product would be, and where the record is thin. Aggregates only — no person, no address, no contact leaves the data plane.

5,552

tech employers with five or more people in Barcelona — local HQs, Spanish hubs and foreign hubs

171,662

people in Barcelona working at them today, counted from the profile locality and the current position

676,429

dated Barcelona positions at those employers, back to the 1990s — the raw material for the year slider

54,242

people who ever worked at the ten pilot companies, every position dated, careers around them read in full

"Today" on this page is the spring 2026 snapshot: the profile layer the serving plane was built from. Positions that started after April 2026 are only partly present, so every 2026 column is hatched and read as partial. Every figure on the page is counted from the run's data files and the implied sums are asserted before the page is written.

Table 1 · the company universe

Who counts as a Barcelona tech employer

We started from people, not from company labels: everyone whose profile sits in Barcelona, grouped by current employer, then the employer classified. That is how a foreign company's Barcelona hub ends up in the universe without anyone listing it by hand.

Industry labels do most of the work. The VC-backed rule admits any vertical with a funding round and a founding year of 2005 or later — Glovo-type companies whose label says "Consumer Services". The description and team-mix rules are capped at 2,000 listed employees so a bank or a pharma group cannot slip in on the word "software".

"Listed worldwide" is the company page's global employee figure and is not comparable with the Barcelona count. Amazon's Barcelona number includes its logistics workforce — the function mix on the company card will show it; a Software Development label does not make every employee an engineer.

Table 1 field coverage — what the record holds per company

measured
Field the brief asks forFilledSource and note
Company id, name100%Company dimension; one id per company page. Several pages can be one company (Typeform has three, Adevinta four) — the pilot groups them by hand.
Domain97%Company dimension. Not unique: a domain can carry several pages.
Logo URL100%Upstream company record (square logo). Measured on the pilot ids; expected near-complete for pages with a logo.
Street address + postal code (HQ)84%Postal code on the company dimension for the 2,557 companies headquartered in Barcelona metro; the street line sits on the upstream record (pilot: 13 of 15).
Lat / lng per office0%Not on the company record. Job postings carry coordinates for most Barcelona-located posts (see Postings), which gives one point per hiring office; the rest is a geocoding step from the address.
HQ city, country; local vs hub100%Company dimension, resolved HQ country + locality; rule for local / Spanish hub / foreign hub is on this page.
Founded year79%Company dimension.
Industry (label)100%Company dimension (two taxonomies merged). AI flag and tech flag rules are on this page.
Funding: last round type, date, amount37%Company dimension (funding bridge). 2,056 of 5,552 have a round on record; investor names and total raised are not in the serving plane.
Headcount: listed worldwide100%Company dimension. A global figure — compare with "people in Barcelona by our count", never with each other.
People in Barcelona (our count)100%Measured on this page: people whose profile locality names Barcelona and whose current position is at the company.
Status: active / acquired / closed0%Not on the record: the operating-status field is empty for the whole table. Acquisitions surface only as page renames ("… acquired by …").

The honest edge of Table 1

Company ids are pages, not legal entities. Typeform is three pages, Adevinta four, Paack three; the pilot merges them by hand and the full pull needs the same step for the long tail. One defect class we hit: TravelPerk's page id carries a "Perk" (Boston) record in the company dimension, while every position still says TravelPerk — the id is right, the dimension row is not, and a name-override table fixes it. Expect a handful of these in 5,552 companies; the pilot found one in twelve.

Lat/lng is not on the company record. The street address and postal code are (84% of Barcelona-headquartered companies carry a postal code), and job postings carry coordinates for most Barcelona-located posts. Geocoding the rest is the client's step, as the brief already allows.

How to read Table 2The brief's grain is company × year × function × seniority with headcount, hires, departures and internal moves. This section is the city total of that table; the pilot shows the same cells for twelve companies. The full table has 5,552 companies × 8 year-ends × up to 12 functions × 6 levels; most cells are empty for small employers, and the delivered file carries only the non-empty ones.

Table 4 · job postings

The posting archive starts in July 2021

The brief asks how far back the archive goes and how complete it is before 2024. Measured on the sixty largest Spain-headquartered tech employers in the universe (260,346 postings) and on the pilot companies: the first posting is dated July 2021, nothing earlier exists, and 2022 onward is complete in the sense that every year has the full twelve months.

Typeform's Barcelona page stops posting in September 2022 and its "Distributed Team" page takes over — the same page-merging the people side needs. Socialpoint posts almost only in Barcelona; Dynatrace and Preply mostly elsewhere, which is why the Barcelona column, not the total, is the one the map should read. Time-to-close is computable where both the posted and the closed dates exist; the remote / hybrid / onsite field and the language of the post are not stored as fields and would be read from the posting text.

Question 2 · pay and gender

The salary band is a coarse model; posted pay is rare

Two sources, as the brief suspected. The enrichment record carries a band per person; job postings carry a stated range on a small share of posts. Neither is a per-person salary and the page does not treat them as one.

36%

of Barcelona tech people have an enrichment record at all (43,888 of 121,770 with a resolvable profile key)

11%

carry a salary band — 13,534 people; the band's median midpoint is 50,000 with the quartiles at 40,000 and 62,500

15%

carry a gender value — 18,046 people; split below

15%

of all 2,276,220 Barcelona profiles with an enrichment record carry a band (90,852 of 598,221) — the field is thin city-wide, not only in tech

The band vocabulary

90,852 Barcelona profiles with a band · most common min – max pairs

The values come in a handful of round bands with no currency, period or gross/net on the record, and on 58% of the rows the "min" is above the "max" — the page reads the pair as an unordered band. It is an ordinal signal from a model upstream of our data plane — fit for "which band is more common in engineering than in sales", not for a figure per person. Use posted ranges and an outside benchmark for euros.

Gender, where present

18,046 Barcelona tech people with a value

Male11,723 65.0%Female6,323 35.0%

Inferred upstream from the first name; the two spellings on the record are merged here. Coverage is 15%, so any gender split is a sample of the workforce, not the workforce.

The five questions · and the next step

What the data answers, measured

01

How big is the universe, and how does it compare with the listed employee counts?

5,552 tech employers with five or more people in Barcelona, 171,662 people. The listed worldwide figures sum to 16,142,278 for the 5,538 companies that have one — a global number that says nothing about the city. The right coverage check is the one the brief proposes: the client's public Barcelona headcounts for the ten pilot companies against the "Snapshot" column of the pilot table.

02

How is salary_min/max built, and on how many Barcelona profiles is it filled?

A band on the enrichment record, inferred upstream of our plane from role and profile — no currency, period or gross/net stored, a handful of round values, bounds that sometimes invert. Filled on 11% of Barcelona tech people (13,534). Posted ranges are on 7.5% of 2025 Barcelona postings at the sixty largest local employers. Our recommendation stands with the brief's: medians by role and level only, checked against an outside benchmark.

03

How do past years behave — what share of the 2019 workforce can you still see?

Of the 112,362 Barcelona tech positions active on 31 December 2019 that the data holds, 75% belong to someone whose profile is still in Barcelona and 38% are still open. At the ten pilot companies, 40% of the 2019 team is still there and 11% is abroad. What no profile-based source can count is the share of the 2019 workforce that never had a profile or deleted it — which is why the trend is the product and the absolute needs the public benchmark.

04

Can the dataset be refreshed quarterly?

The four tables are produced by scripts over a serving plane that is rebuilt from the upstream store; a refresh is a re-run against a newer build. The cadence of the build is an operations decision on our side, not a property of the data — this page states feasibility and leaves the commitment to the agreement.

05

What may be published, and the credit line?

Everything on this page is the publishable layer: company names, counts, year series, flows between companies, function and level mixes. Table 3 at person level leaves the plane only with a random key and no name, address or contact, as the brief rules. Terms and the credit line are for the two parties to agree; the page takes no position.

What we deliberately do not claim

That the headcounts are the real workforce: they are the profiled workforce, undercounted for ops, support and logistics roles and for past years. That "mid" is mid: it is every title without a level word. That the salary band is pay. That an industry label makes every employee a technologist (Amazon). That the company dimension is clean: pages merge, split and collide, and the full pull budgets for a manual pass over the long tail.

Step 3 · the full pull, sized

What the four tables weigh

T1
Companies — 5,552 rows with the fields in the coverage table; a manual page-merge pass over the largest few hundred.
T2
Headcount by company × year × function × seniority — 5,552 companies × 8 year-ends; the city total on this page is the same computation summed. Location rule as on this page, fire counts shipped with the table.
T3
Moves — about 617,470 hire and departure events since 2019 at the universe (positions started plus positions ended, Barcelona rule), each with the previous or next position resolved as in the pilot.
T4
Postings — from July 2021; 63,105 Barcelona postings at the sixty largest local employers alone, with coordinates on most and a stated salary on few.

Before the pull

The pilot's acceptance test is the client's

The brief's step 2 is a two-sided check. Our side is on this page: twelve companies rebuilt in full. The other side — the public Barcelona headcounts for Glovo, TravelPerk, Factorial, Typeform, Wallbox, Holded, Paack, Adevinta, Socialpoint and Preply — goes next to the "Snapshot" column, and the ratio it produces is the coverage factor for the whole universe.

Where the ratio is off, the first suspects are page merges (Typeform, Adevinta, Paack), marketplace supply counted as staff (Preply), and logistics or retail staff under a tech label (Amazon, Glovo riders).

Method and data notes

How the numbers were made

SnapshotThe serving plane's people layer is a spring-2026 build of the profile store with a small later delta; positions that started after April 2026 are only partly present. Every 2026 column is hatched. Company records are read from the same plane; street addresses, logos and job postings from the upstream record, by company id.

"In Barcelona"A profile is in Barcelona when its locality string names Barcelona in any of the spellings the data uses (2,276,220 profiles). A position is in Barcelona when its own location names Barcelona, or when it has no location and the profile is in Barcelona today. Positions located elsewhere are not counted even if the profile is in Barcelona now.

Employer resolutionCurrent employers come from the current-position array of the profile; a person with two current positions counts at both. Pilot companies are groups of page ids merged by hand; the universe treats each page as a company and the full pull adds the merge step.

ClassifierFunction (12 buckets) and seniority (6) are regular expressions over the title in English, Spanish and Catalan, self-checked against a fixed list of titles. Shares the rule cannot read are printed next to every exhibit that uses it. AI title = an AI/ML word in the title with word boundaries, so "Chairman" does not match.

FlowsPrevious position = the person's latest other position that started before the hire and ended within 18 months before it (or was still open); next position = the earliest other position starting from a month before the departure. City and country are parsed from the location string's first and last comma-separated parts.

ReproducibilitySix scripts in the task folder (01-universe … 06-report) rebuild every file and this page; the page asserts the implied sums before it is written. Data files stay out of the repository; the figures behind each exhibit are in _data/figures.json next to this page.
